What is Memory in Psychology?
A capability of your mind and brain that stores some information regarding your past and present in order to use that in the future.
Types of Memory in Psychology:
Now I will proceed towards types of memory. We have 3 types of memory that will be discussed one by one.
1. SENSORY MEMORY:
Sensory memory is that memory that stores information in our brain with the help of our senses. It is the memory that is picked up by our senses and then that memory is stored in our brain.
Sensory memory is further divided into 2 types:
It is concerned with our visuals. This is our visual sensory memory. It lasts only for a second.
It is concerned with our sounds. It is particular to our auditory system. It lasts 3-4 seconds.
2. SHORT TERM MEMORY:
As the name indicates that it is a short-term memory so it has a capacity to remember a small piece of information for a shorter period of time.
Short-term memory is also called working memory. Working memory is that memory that deals with your immediate processing. It lasts for 2-30 seconds.
3. LONG TERM MEMORY:
Long-term memory refers to that memory that is responsible for the information stored for an extremely long period of time. It lasts for the whole life.
It is further divided into 2 types:
It is a declarative memory. It is that type of memory that is easy to explain and define.
It is a non-declarative memory. It is that type of memory that is unexplainable and not easy to define.
WHY WE FORGET THINGS?
We often forget things. This is because of the reason that the information that is stored in our brain has not transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory.
So due to this reason, we usually forget things.
